Cut for spoilers.

I enjoyed Laura a lot more in this episode, and I liked her interaction with Shadow except the interrogation about Robby, which I realize is probably realistic, but was just trite and uninteresting to watch. The entire scene in the bathroom was great, although my heart broke when he told her he wasn't her puppy anymore. (Although I was later annoyed to have Mad Sweeney reiterate it... Idk, I think this episode lacked finesse all around, which is disappointing.) I understand why he said it, and it's possible he's lying, but Shadow's connection to Laura is really important in the book, and I think especially after how the relationship was portrayed in "Git Gone," I'm wary about the direction it's taking on the show. That aside, I enjoyed pretty much every minute of Laura in this episode; her argument with Mad Sweeney was fantastic (especially the, "You're an asshole, dead wife!" scene, which delighted me. Lauraaaaaa), and let's be honest, I did not hate seeing her naked.

The rest of the episode was actually pretty blah for me. I understand setting up this plot point is important, but honestly I was bored. It was a lot of expositional dialogue, which is just lazy writing and frankly uninteresting to sit through. Most of the time the new gods are onscreen (not just in this episode, but especially in this episode) I'm bored. Yeah. Straight up. And I was disappointed only to see Mr. Nancy in spider form; I realize it's not time for him, but it felt like such a tease not only to have him mentioned twice, but to have him physically there with no payoff. And the pacing and presentation is different in the book, the way tension is built, so it didn't bother me in the book but onscreen I am over Shadow being constantly incredulous and I am over Wednesday being pompous and mysterious... it feels like beating a dead horse at this point. I did very much enjoy Wednesday's conversation with the raven, though, especially the raven knocking on the door.

So. Yeah. I didn't dislike this episode like I did the last one, but it was lackluster and I'm afraid the wind has gone out of its sails, which is such a disappointment because of how wonderfully it started and how good the good parts are. Get it together, guys.

hollyslowly: TOS; Kirk looking down, Spock looking at Kirk. (We're not going to do better next time.)

If we'd had this episode without last week's, I wouldn't be worried at all. But "Git Gone" has sort of ruined the relationship between Shadow and Laura for me. :(
