TITLE: Soft Spot
RATING: PG-13
FANDOM: Top Gun
PAIRING: Pete “Maverick” Mitchell/Tom “Iceman” Kazansky
SUMMARY: Iceman wasn’t all hard ass.
AUTHOR’S NOTES: Written for [livejournal.com profile] dailyfics prompt #1, soft (See my full table here).

It was hard to think of metaphors for Iceman without leaning on his call sign, but fuck, it was accurate. He was like that, Maverick thought—cold as ice, hard as ice. Like one big ice sculpture, frozen through and so hard you had to use a fucking chainsaw to chip the thing.

Only, the longer Maverick spent with Ice, the more he saw that Ice wasn’t all like that. He had soft spots. Like how he was ticklish on the insides of his thighs, high up, or how his grandmother called him Tommy, how he called her every week and sent her money every month. Like how seeing people mistreated angried up his blood, melting away that cold exterior—he and Maverick had gone to dinner once, and a man at the restaurant had treated the waitress so badly that finally Ice stood, walked slowly over to his table, and pulled the guy from his booth by his lapels, keeping him writhing in hand until he apologized to the poor girl.

Like how he let himself get lost kissing Maverick, eyes closing, body relaxing. How he brought Maverick flowers, and small gifts, like a nesting magpie. It was weird to be courted by Iceman; it was weird to realize that maybe the softest thing about Ice was the soft spot he had for Maverick.

This fills me with such incredible amounts of happy. :D

Heh. Too true, Mav. Too true.

That protectiveness, that concern for the well-being of others was one of the things I found most interesting about Ice's character. Because for a guy who was supposed to be the asshole, he seemed to be pretty damn considerate.

Aw, yay! Thank you; it's maybe the fluffiest thing I've ever written, so I had Concerns.

Well, yeah. His beef is basically, "I'm afraid you're going to hurt somebody. I would like to make sure that doesn't happen." Basically, everything I think while watching the movie, Ice says. (More handsomely, of course. And sometimes in a towel!)

Also -- you are one of the few people who will appreciate this -- I now have a total Ice was raised by his grandmother and she still calls him Tommy even though he's a big, important fighter pilot now head canon and it delights me pretty consistently.

YEEEEEEEEEEES.

Fucking yes. So much. Especially since I have this idea that Maverick was raised by that white picket fence, naval officer father, blah blah blah charmed life thing...

Have I mentioned how much Iceman reminds me of Scott Summers? Iceman really reminds me of Scott Fucking Summers.

It's the entitlement thing. He comes off like a spoiled rich kid. I feel like, with Ice's work ethic, with the insane control he holds over himself, he probably had to work very hard to get where he is, and nothing makes hard like poverty.

Does that make Maverick Wolverine?

All the knowledge I have of the X-Men comes from the movies, but I always liked Scott. He's a good guy!

Mine too! That, and fanfiction. Minisinoo got me into it. Her other fic was so incredible that I started reading the X-Men stuff, even though all my knowledge was strictly movie-based. I highly recommend that, actually. xD

I, uh. Had a thing for James Marsden at some point.

Exactly my thought. And exactly why the character pisses me off to no end. Epitomizes the Reagan era to me, I suppose.

The wealth is gonna trickle down, honey! Any moment now!

Wow, um, yeah. I can see that . . .
